Mark Thomas developed solutions to enhance operations and safety for the highly-congested interchanges adjacent to one of the busiest shopping malls in the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara. The project evaluated a wide variety of geometric alternatives such as constructing a new access from the freeway to Winchester Boulevard, closing a local street, constructing a flyover ramp to the Valley Fair Mall parking lot and providing an exclusive lane from off-ramp to Monroe Street. The newly constructed interchange has reduced traffic congestion and delays by eliminating weaving and merging movements, and improved access and safety for bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
